Anyone been to Rome?

04/07/2008

After 2 failed starts and 8 years of trying, Tim and I are finally off to Rome this Friday and I'm completely overexcited (and more than a bit over-planned bearing in mind we only thought of booking it 2 weeks ago).  We have 5 days in an apartment 5 mins walk from the Colosseum and then 2 days in a hotel in Sorrento.  It's on my top 3 of places I want to go to and the only one I'm likely to manage for several years and we've drawn up a top 5, Top 7 and Top 8 list of things to see (depending on time) as well as walking tours  - most of which will probably fall by the wayside.  I'm also optimistically taking 5 books.

Anyone have any pointers?

Gravatar Image1 - buy the daily ticket from "ATAC", it's 4€ and will be valid all day, on all the metro network, buses and local trains.
move with the metro and take some time to walk around, it's part of the experience.
I'll suggest to go see the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, Trinità dei Monti (nice shopping near there) the vittoriano and so on...

Gravatar Image2 - Leave some time to just stroll around in Rome. Plan plenty of time for meals or you'll feel rushed. The Pantheon and Piazza Navona are good choices and just a few minutes walk between

It's also an easy walk form Trevi to the Piazza di Spagna

Gravatar Image3 - After a visit of Vatican City you could walk down the road "Via della Concilliazione" to the Castel San Angelo. On the right side you'll find the hotel Columbus { Link } .
The hotel has a great hall and a really nice garden where you can sit and have lunch or dinner. The prices are not cheap but I expected them to be much higher. The food was goood.
We've been there last year in may for lunch and I was really surprised to find such a lovely and quite place just some 100 meters away from all that tourist crowds.
